Lia Manoliu


Hello dear readers! Today I thought to introduce someone whose name sport everyone knows it, but I bet many stop there.
Lia Manoliu (who lived between 25 April 1932 and 9 January 1998) was a Romanian woman athlete, winner of gold at the Mexico Olympic Games in 1968 and bronze in Rome Summer Olympics 1960 Summer Olympics Tokyo 1964 at throwing the disc.
Also in legislature 1990-1992, was elected as a senator in Bucharest on party lists NSF.
Between 1990-1998, he held the position of President of the Romanian Olympic Committee. Born in Chisinau on April 25, 1932, Lia Manoliu began practicing sport athletics (the Romanian Athletic Club), tennis, table tennis, volleyball and basketball, the last being part of team science discipline Bucharest. Along with sports activity Power graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest (1954). At 16 he started practicing athletics, specializing in discus throw, where he obtained excellent results up to 40 years. Participated in six consecutive editions of the Olympic Games (from Helsinki - Munich 1952 to 1972), has a record of longevity Olympic mentioned in the "Guinness World Records". She won three Olympic medals, one gold and two bronze in 1968 in 1960 and 1964. It was 12 times national champion and seven times champion of the Balkans, and the COR was vice president (1973-1990) and president (1990-1998) of the Romanian Olympic Committee.
Internationally, he was a member of the Committee functions within the Olympic Academy IOC Presidents Working Group issues athletes of the Association of National Olympic Committees, member of the Executive Committee of the Association of National Olympic Committees European individual member of honor ACNOE (since 1993), member of the Women of the international forum, and member of the athletics competitions at the European Athletics Association. He was awarded the Fair Play Trophy, awarded by UNESCO (1973), the Olympic Order "Bronze Collar" (1975), Women in Sport Trophy (CIO - 1990) and IOC Centenary Trophy (1994).
He died of a heart attack in January 1998 after he went into a coma during surgery for brain tumor a week before. He was buried at Bellu.
National stadium "Lia Manoliu" in Bucharest was named in her honor.
