Ilie Nastase


And now a brief from the world of sports!
Ilie Nastase (born July 19, 1946, Bucharest) is a former professional tennis player and one of the leading tennis players of the 1970s, the world number one twice, in 1972 and 1973.
Among the 57 titles in singles, which Ilie Nastase has won over his career include the U.S. Open in 1972, respectivRoland Garros in 1973. Won the doubles tournament at Wimbledon in 1973, 1970 Roland Garros and the U.S. Open in 1975. He also won four times Champions Tour in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975. For Romania Davis Cup team has played for 18 years a total of 146 singles and doubles matches, winning 109. Along with Ion Tiriac was finalist of the Davis Cup three times, in 1969, 1971 and 1972.
He was second in singles competition at Wimbledon twice, in 1972, playing the final against Stan Smith in 1976 against Björn Borg. Nastase was known for his jokes arena, but also a reputation for using aggressive tactics, many of them successful, so he earned the nickname Nasty ("mischievous") after several incidents.
He wrote several novels in French in 1980, then entered politics in 1990, standing as a candidate in 1996 for mayor of Bucharest. In 1994 he was captain unplayable Romania Davis Cup Team.
In 2005 "TENNIS Magazine" ranked 28th on the list of "40 greatest tennis players of the past 40 years." He was nominated four times "Best Romanian athlete of the year" (in 1969, 1972, 1973 and 1974). On 12 February 2008, after almost 11 years to lead the Romanian Tennis Federation, resigned as president of the Federation declaring himself "defeated by justice and the press in Romania".
Through a presidential decree of 1 December 2008, Ilie Nastase was filed in the level of Major General (2 stars) retired at the Ministry of Defense.
